What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If you're in pain or something doesn't seem right, call us. Here are the most common situations we treat urgently:

🦷 Severe Toothache

Intense or throbbing tooth pain can indicate infection, decay, or a cracked tooth. Don't ignore severe pain — call us right away for same-day relief.

💔 Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical! If a tooth is knocked out, keep it moist (in milk or between your cheek and gum) and call us immediately. Reimplantation is possible within an hour.

👑 Lost or Broken Crown

A lost or cracked crown can expose sensitive tooth structure and cause pain. Save the crown if possible and call us — we can often replace it the same day.

😬 Cracked or Chipped Tooth

A cracked tooth can worsen quickly and become more painful. Depending on the severity, we can repair cracks with bonding, a crown, or other restorative treatments.

🔴 Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a serious infection that can spread. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, fever, and a bad taste in your mouth. Call us immediately — this requires urgent care.

🩸 Soft Tissue Injury

Cuts or lacerations to the lips, gums, tongue, or cheeks can bleed heavily. Apply gentle pressure with gauze and call our office or go to an emergency room if bleeding is severe.

🦷 Lost Filling

A lost filling exposes the inner tooth to bacteria and sensitivity. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can help protect the tooth until you can see us.

😖 Broken Denture or Braces

Broken dental appliances can cause discomfort and oral injuries. Call us for guidance on how to manage the situation and to schedule a repair appointment.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Follow these steps while you wait to be seen:

  • Call us first — we'll guide you through exactly what to do for your specific situation
  • For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist in milk or saliva — do not scrub or clean it
  • For bleeding, apply firm, gentle pressure with clean gauze or cloth
  • For swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek in 10-minute intervals
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) can temporarily reduce pain — do not place aspirin directly on the gum
  • If you suspect a jaw fracture, go to the nearest emergency room
